Savings Plan Opportunity (Azure)

CostLens surfaces Azure compute Savings Plan recommendations — commit to an hourly spend to save on flexible compute vs pay-as-you-go.

Updated July 20261 min read

CostLens surfaces Azure compute Savings Plan recommendations. A Savings Plan trades a fixed hourly commitment for a large discount (often up to ~65%) on flexible compute usage. Buying to your steady-state baseline captures the discount without over-committing.

Advisory only

This is a purchase decision, not an automated fix. CostLens shows the economics — term, monthly/annual savings — so you can buy with confidence in the Azure portal.

How it works

Cost Management is queried

CostLens reads Azure's benefit (Savings Plan) recommendations for the subscription.

Economics are computed

Each recommendation shows the term (1yr / 3yr) and the normalised monthly + annual savings.

What to do

  1. Review the recommended hourly commitment against your expected baseline over the term.
  2. Purchase the Savings Plan in the Azure portal (Cost Management → Savings Plans → Add).

Reading the recommendation

The recommendation shows the term, estimated monthly savings, and estimated annual savings. Savings Plans are more flexible than reservations (they apply across instance families and regions), at a slightly smaller discount.

Required permissions

Limitations

  • Advisory only — CostLens never auto-purchases a Savings Plan.
  • The benefit-recommendations data requires Cost Management access and a few days of usage history; it degrades to nothing when unavailable.
